Challenges in Recruitment and Selection

HR sector has grown tremendously in the past few years The estimated size of the global market for human resource technology in 2021 was valued at USD 32.58 billion, and it is anticipated to increase at a CAGR of 9.2% from 2022 to 2031 to reach USD 76.5 billion (Source: GlobeNewswire)

The tremendous growth in the HR sector increases the challenges in managing the heart of the organization, the Human resource.

In this article, we are going to discuss some of the challenges faced by HR and how to overcome those challenges. We will take a look at the challenge based on some of the main functions of human resource management.

Human resource management (HRM, or simply HR) is a function in organizations designed to maximize employee performance in service of their employer’s strategic objectives. (HRM in changing organizational contexts, 2009).To manage it effectively we could segregate it into 7 main functions.

  1.  Recruitment and Selection
  2. Performance Management
  3. Learning & Development
  4. Benefits Administration
  5. Employee Records Management
  6.  Compensation & Benefits Planning
  7. Employee Relations

Recruitment and selection, one of the main challenges human resource personnel faces during the modern competition.

What are the reasons why this task has become more difficult?

  • With the rise in competition in the global economy, companies try to recruit the top talent in the market from the same talent pool. Due to this,it is difficult to attract the top talent.
  • Traditional job market took a turn of events after the global pandemic, which started significant changes in the job market. Currently this has shifted towards more dynamic job market with the rise in remote working jobs.
  • Companies are more likely to perform better, when there is an employee portfolio gathered from diverse environments. Even if the company could recruit from diverse backgrounds, if the company fails to develop an inclusive culture, it is difficult to succeed.

How do we overcome these challenges?

  • Develop an employee referral program(Jayanthi, D.M.A., 2017) – This is where suitable candidates are selected based on the current company employees' suggestions. If their suggestion is in line with the company’s requirements, you reward them. Therefore through this method, you get access to a larger market of qualified candidates which in turn gives HR the opportunity of recruiting the best fit for the company while there is tough competition in the market.
  • Offer competitive benefits packages – With the rise in the global economy, and when recruiting from the same resource talent pool, the best way of attracting vacancies is through a higher competitive benefits package for the employees.
  • Strengthening the company brand (Collins, C.J. and Stevens, C.K., 2002).– This is more of a strategic and long-term task where the company improves its brand image through CSR projects, employee engagement activities such as having sports days, celebrating women's day, interactive session from time to time with higher management, etc. Updating company activities on social media platforms on staff engagements directs a positive attitude about the company by public which in return increases brand image.

 Conclusion

The dynamic job market makes it an immensely difficult task to recruit the right people at the right time to get the task done at the right time. This challenge can be overcome by the above-highlighted methods. There could also be methods where as a company we assure employee development through how their career path will evolve, the importance of the selected career path, sharing success stories of senior employees, and encouraging employee questions to clarify any issue within the organization to move towards the company goals and objective, likewise the list is much more.

    1. Hi Azeem.
Not that all companies have the potential to adopt AI into HRM practices. There are medium and small scale organisations which follow the traditional method. Accordingly, the challenges discussed in the article are still being faced by such organisations.

  2. Believe you have not covered all methods of recruitment and selection you find nowadays. For example finding prospective candidates from social media like LinkedIn. Also I believe that we need to discuss that HR personnel should not get carried away with the candidates academic qualifications only in the selection process. Should focus on the competency for the post. Observed that you have not discussed about the selection process keeping in line with the heading of the post.

  3. The article highlights the challenges faced by HR personnel in recruitment and selection of the top talent in a dynamic job market. The reasons behind the difficulty include the rise in competition and the shift towards remote working jobs. The article suggests that an employee referral program, offering competitive benefits packages, and strengthening the company brand through CSR projects and employee engagement activities are some of the ways to overcome these challenges. I agree with the article's recommendations as they align with the strategies proposed by scholars such as Jayanthi, D.M.A. (2017), Collins, C.J. and Stevens, C.K. (2002), and Lawler, E. and Boudreau, J. (2015), which emphasize the importance of a positive brand image and employee engagement activities in recruitment and retention of employees.

  5. Good Article, Ashendra.

Another popular method to overcome the above mentioned challenged would be offering remote work option. This allows companies to access a larger diverse pool of talent, regardless of location.

    What do you think?

  6. Hi Great topic there will always be challenges to find the right person for a specific role and be able to retain them. People are looking for jobs that need more experience than they already have in greater numbers. Should HR executives demand experience or provide more training?
